Chapter 1
It was a long journey from London to Dover by coach. When Mr
Jarvis Lorry finally arrived at the Royal George Hotel, he went into
the dining room and fell asleep almost at once. He woke when the
waiter brought him his breakfast. ‘I am expecting to meet a young
lady here today,’ he said to the man. ‘She will ask for the gentleman
from Tellson’s Bank in London. When she arrives, please let me
know.’
He spent the day walking on the beach, and was sitting in front of
the fire in the dark when he heard a coach arrive outside the hotel.
‘Miss Manette is here, Mr Lorry,’ said the waiter, ‘and she would
like to see you at once.’
Mr Lorry followed the waiter to a room where Miss Manette was
waiting. She was a pretty, intelligent-looking young lady, no more
than seventeen, with golden hair and questioning blue eyes.
