The novel shows the violence which followed the
            A Tale of Two Cities
events of the revolution. It shows the cruelty shown by
the revolutionaries towards both the aristocracy and the
thousands of innocent working people who were wrongly
punished in the years after the revolution. However, it is also
a story of redemption. This is illustrated by the character of
Sydney Carton, who having previously lived a wasteful and
careless life, finds peace by helping his friends. A Tale of Two
Cities was written as a warning to British society because it
highlighted how similar the two countries were at that time.
It showed Britain what could happen if the government did
not do something to balance the unfairness in British society.

During his lifetime, Dickens published fifteen major
novels, many short stories, plays, articles and a number of
non-fiction works. He campaigned throughout his life for
many social changes, including the right to education, and
children’s rights. He is considered one of the greatest writers
of all times, and his novels have been adapted for stage and
            screen many times.
