seen at the moment of execution. Perhaps, in his mind, he saw
a beautiful city and a wonderful people rising from this terrible
violence, and the evil of this time and the time before slowly
dying out. Perhaps he saw the place that he would always hold
in the hearts of Lucie and her husband, and of their children and
grandchildren, for years to come. Perhaps he saw her crying for him
on that day every year, or perhaps he saw the baby boy who was
named after him, slowly moving forward on the path of life and
bringing greatness to his name.
And perhaps he thought to himself, ‘It is a far, far better thing that
I do now than I have ever done.’
