Moving Into the
Modern World
Jawaharlal Nehru (juw-AH-url-ahl NAY-roo) became India’s first
prime minister. There have been many leaders since that time. One of
these rulers was Nehru’s daughter, Indira Gandhi. She became prime
minister in 1966. She led the country for many years. However, because
she abused her power, she was voted out of office.
India is a complex country. Poverty and a very large population
remain big problems in the country. So does hatred
among different religious groups. There are many
problems among the Hindus, Muslims, and
