Ashoka’s Rule
The height of the Mauryan Empire was under King Ashoka
(ah-SHOW-kuh). He was the grandson of Chandragupta. He was the
last great ruler of this dynasty. While he was king, the Mauryan Empire
conquered nearly all of India. There were many bloody battles. The
king was very upset by what he saw. So, he gave up warfare forever.
And, he converted to Buddhism.
Ashoka was very committed to teaching people about Buddhism.
He brought Buddhism to much of central Asia. He insisted on
nonviolence to humans and animals.
His rule of the
Mauryan Empire was
during its strongest
period. The empire
collapsed less than 100
years after his death.
