Sydney Carton followed in Lucie’s steps to the prison of La Force,
where she had stood hundreds of times. There, he stopped at a small
chemist’s shop, wrote what he wanted on a piece of paper, and
handed it to the chemist, who raised his eyebrows in surprise.

‘Is this for you, citizen?’ he asked.

           ‘For me.’
‘You will be careful to keep them separate? You know what will
         happen if you mix them?’

           ‘Perfectly,’ said Carton.
The chemist prepared some small packets, and gave them to
Carton, who put them one by one into his coat pocket, and walked
out into the night. He walked with the settled manner of a tired
man, who had got lost, but who had at last found the right road, and
         who saw its end.
